Review: Lipstick Queen | Sinner vs. Saint Lipsticks (Scarlet & Julia)

If there's one thing that makes a beauty product instantly more covetable, its the elusive factor. I've long heard about Lipstick Queen from bloggers in the UK (they are total enablers I'm telling you) but it's actually created from Australian born Poppy King who traveled the world working in cosmetics before starting her own range of lip products. Her claim to fame in my books? A great range of classic shades with bold saturation in corresponding matte and sheer formulations. All good things come in twos.

Lipstick Queen Sinner Saint

Brand: Lipstick Queen
Product: Saint Wine* (sheer), Pinky Nude Sinner* (matte)
Colours: 20 shades (in both formulas)
Size: 3.5grams
Price: $30 CAD
Availability: Scarlet & Julia (online), Nordstrom Canada
Website: www.lipstickqueen.com

With all the ranges that Poppy has put out, her take on the Sinner and Saint combination was a genius concept. Twenty everyday classic shades are offered in Sinner (opaque matte) and Saint (sheer) formulations so you can always have your favourite lipstick to wear however you like. If you're a bit of an lipstick addict, you know the frustration of finding the right shade but wanting just a little something extra. With this range, I can wear the same colour in sheer for casual makeup and the opaque version for a more done up look - great for a day to night transition for example!

There's a certain vintage aesthetic to the boxes and the lipsticks come in nicely weighted, slightly rubberized casings. Their slim compact design may look standard here but some of her other ranges have quite striking colour design combinations.

SAINT WINE
re(purchase): Probably yes.

Having gotten a makeup touch up at Nordstrom, the makeup artist put this over my lips prepped with a bit of balm. The result was juicy, lush and delicate yet without sacrificing colour. Saint Wine looks like a deep bordeaux in the tube but applies with a slightly glossy translucent quality. The colour is true from the bullet to my lips and according to the brand's website, these contain 10% pigment but I can tell you these are definitely buildable. It's a very interesting finish that I've rarely seen in other products because while these do have a slight gloss, they are not wet nor oily and glides on easily over fine lip lines. Best part? They let me have all the colour without feeling I have to amp up the rest of my makeup to match, plus the formula lasts a surprisingly long time with minimal dryness. No bleeding what so ever.

No fragrance.

PINKY NUDE SINNER
(re)purchase: Undecided.
I had been debating one of Poppy's classic true reds but finally gave in to this rich pinky nude shade. As part of the Sinner range, this formula contains 90% pigment and is meant to give an opaque matte finish. On my skin this shade pulls slightly more coral but on my lips, it's again true to the colour of the bullet. No need for multiple layers here, one swipe will give you what you want and I find it reads like a satin finish more so than a true matte. Nonetheless, this feels like an old school smoothing cream lipstick without the ticklishness or beeswax feel. It certainly feels heavier than the Saint variation but not at all uncomfortable. While this didn't dry out my lips, it didn't hydrate either so I would still recommend a good balm routine if you plan on wearing this all day. In fact, one application of this lipstick lasts 4-5 hours while still looking presentable (not perfect but perfectly presentable). Personally I would have liked this to be a bit more emollient but I assume that would take away from the wear.

Slight vanilla fragrance.

I picked up these lipsticks with a gift card courtesy of Scarlet & Julia, a new Canadian online beauty boutique carrying a small curated selection of beauty brands. Hard to find line like Lipstick Queen, Roger and Gallet, Esthederm and Payot are all available. Shipping was quick, well packaged and needs to be signed off upon receiving to make sure you don't loose your parcel. However, I have heard of customers having issues with discount codes not registering on the site and customer service being slow. A few weeks ago I contacted their PR with an email about their company outlook yet still have not received a response. Scarlet and Julia seems to have put their marketing with a PR firm so I'm undecided if this is an issue with the company itself or the PR firm. Nothing wrong with the products but a little hiccup that's worth mentioning.

Lipstick Queen Sinner Saint

THE FINAL VERDICT
Lipstick Queen products revived what women traditionally loved about lipstick and brought it up to date with our modern taste. I adore the selection of colours from the Saint and Sinner range; there's something for every occasion and not to mention the entire concept is quite brilliant. The saturation of the colours are amazing and I'm impressed with its long wear ability as well. While I'm not quite completely sold on the Sinner range, I'd highly recommend the Saint formula because it's just so unique with it's combination of colour and translucency - it's like wearing a lighter lipstick without giving up what I love about lipstick. I don't have lip swatches to show you at the moment since my camera trigger needs some fresh batteries but you must have a try if you ever seem them in person.

 Lipstick & kisses,
