Review: Papaya Enzyme Mask | Alba Botanica

Following my surprising success with the Alba Botanica Sea Algae Enzyme Scrub (reviewed), I decided to brave my way into a few more products from the line that had been sitting in my shopping cart, starting with a face mask. Admittedly it was the idea of papaya that caught my attention rather than it's pore-fecting claims but this jar had a few surprises under the lid.

THE BASICS

Housed in a small plastic jar, the mask itself is actually a green gel.

Wait. Green? Gel?

Yes, that's exactly what I thought as well. Pretty certain I was opening up to a jar of creamy orange, yellow goodness I had to double check the packaging that it was indeed the right product. In fact this questionable looking gelatinous mixture had an unmistakable resemblance to the scent of gummy candy.

Because of its texture, this papaya mask smooths easily over the skin and only a small amount is needed for even coverage. I like to use this mainly concentrated on the center zones of my face, leaving out my cheeks which tend to be drier and needs something more soothing. The sweet scent dissipates quite quickly and for the next 10 minutes that the mask was on my face, it was rather underwhelming to say the least. Unlike most masks, this gel formula doesn't dry hard so after the allotted time, it was straight to the sink for quick rinse.

Much to my surprise (how many times have we been surprised by now?), the after effects left me with notably smoother skin and a fresh slightly brightened appearance overall. It's the kind of difference that makes your complexion look just a little perkier. And while it isn't particularly drying, I do recommend applying a light moisturizer to seal in the goodness.

After a few weeks of continued use, I think it's safe to say that this non conventional looking papaya enzyme mask does a great job of clarifying my skin and keeping my pores clearer as well. I find that although you can not permanently shrink pore size, making sure they are cleansed and happy helps significantly to minimize their appearance and makes covering them up with makeup much easier afterwards.

Now with it's combination of papaya and pineapple enzymes this mask can tend to tingle/irritate my skin slightly if I exfoliated beforehand so make sure you just use a simple gentle face wash in combination with this. Those with sensitive skin may also want to skip out on this one just to be on the safe side.

THE FINAL VERDICT
This Alba Botanica Papaya Enzyme Mask was a surprise in so many different ways but it's end result definitely didn't disappoint. A lightweight and easy to use gel mask, I loved that it was quick (10 minutes is all you really need) and I could use it when I need an instant refresher that also helped to keep my pores clear in the long run. Best suited for those with slightly dry, normal or oily skin I think it would be a great clarifying product to your basic skincare regime as long as you don't have sensitivity issues.
