Review: Garnier | Dark Spot Treatment Mask

Exciting news beauty lovers, if you've been hoarding those convenient packs of asian sheet masks, I'm excited to report that a western drugstore version is now in stores across the country. While certain elusive and high end brands have offered sheet masks here and there, I do believe this is the first time a big drugstore name has entered this well loved category. So here they are, the Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Masks.

THE BASICS
Brand: Garnier
Product: Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask
Size: 6 masks/package, 19ml fluid each
Price: $16.47CAD
Availability: Drugstores nationwide
Would I repurchase: Undecided
Website: www.garnier.ca

I happened upon this Garnier mask completely by accident. Even before the boxes officially hit the shelves, I noticed single packages marked down at the clearance aisle at a local drugstore and for $1.50CAD each, I thought they deserved a trial.

These Dark Spot Treatment Masks are part of Garnier's pre-existing Skin Renew line, with corresponding bright green colours, and is targeted towards reducing dark spots while sorting out uneven skin tone for all skin types. A water based mask, this contains a few natural extracts as well as vitamin C (in the forms of ascorbyl glucoside, citric acid and lemon fruit acid) as it's main treatment ingredient.

Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Phyllanthus Emblica Fruit Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Flower Extract, Peg-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Citrate, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Tetrasodium Edta, Citric Acid, Citrus Medica Limonum Extract/ Lemon Fruit Extract, Xanthan Gum, Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract/ Scutell Aria Baicalensis Root Extract, Imida Zolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Linalool, Limonene, Benzyl Salicylate, Parfum / Fragrance.

With 19ml of fluid listed per pack, this came out as quite a well saturated mask, with a notable fragrance identical (though a little milder perhaps) to the Garnier BB Cream (reviewed). The treatment solution is similar to a light essence with no stickiness at all. What really surprised me most straight from the package was the comfortable texture of the mask material. The thin but absorbent material adhered easily to my face and remained moist for a long time without any excess liquid dripping down my chin.

The comparison photo (above) shows my skin immediate before and after the mask treatment which I used, as directed, for 10 minutes on a timer. Now of course I do have naturally light/fair skin but what I noticed in the after shot is slight reduction in the dark areas around the mouth as well as the darker patches on my left cheek. In person, the results are less visible because it's hard to visually recall the slight details of my before condition but there is something subtle going on. What I was able to see in the mirror was that my pores (near my nose) were clearly smaller, my skin felt plump and felt very smooth. On the hydration scale, this isn't the best I've used (moisturizer still needed afterwards) but would certainly be enough for those with normal to slightly dry skin or for usage during the muggy summer heat.

THE FINAL VERDICT
I loved the lightweight feel and immediate radiance boost. This would be a perfect quick pick me up boost before a big event when you just want a little something extra for your skin and now that I'm writing this, it popped into my mind that it could be amazing paired with the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. My only reservations about these however is the price which is much higher (at regular retail) than what I would normally pay especially considering I have access to asian sheet masks which perform nearly identically for much cheaper. Also note that Garnier recommends a 3 times per week treatment period for maximum effectiveness which means you're going to go through a package in 2 weeks. With that being said, if you have the budget to keep these in your regular routine or can catch it on discount, it's worth keeping a few in your drawers.
