Beauty Tutorial | Style Icon Hilary Duff Smokey Eye

Style Icon Look_02

Ever swooned over a makeup look you saw on a celebrity?
Today's look is just that!

I’ve always been a smokey brown kind of gal and I’ve been told on a few occasions that I’ve got a few molecules of Hilary Duff in me so since she’s also a smokey eye lover, here’s my interpretation of her most frequently photographed look.

Starting with a satin finish base, even out your skin with a light layer of mousse foundation using concealer where needed (around the eyes, chin, nose). Make sure you moisturize well before hand as to prevent the foundation catching on dry patches.

Next comes the eyes, working with the heaviest feature first allows you to adjust everything else to suit later. Hilary tends to wear warmer tones when she’s brunette so take a metallic coppery brown shadow from the base of the lash line up 2/3rds to the brow and slightly beyond the edge of the eye shape. Diffuse the surrounding with a domed brush to soften then with add a deep rich brown near the lashes, blending into the copper and intensifying the eye.

A flick of black liquid liner goes on top, adjusting the thickness to your lid space. Rim both the top and bottom waterline with a soot black pencil then mascara your lashes like mad or just pop on some falsies ("demi wispies" are a good choice). Finish the eyes with a touch of copper along the lower lash line for a super metallic effect.

Pair this look with a slightly lighter brow that's sharp at the arch using either a pencil (as I did here) or a powder. On the cheeks goes light peachy pink blush, satin or matte it's up to you as there is plenty of shine on the eyes. Lastly I decided to do a twist with the lip choice. Though Hilary is usually seen with a glossy or creamy pout, I opted for a neutral matte pink (new product that I've been dying to test out). Alternatively, something like a "creamsheen" or "lipglass" (Florabundance) by MAC would be the perfect spot on match.

(Side note: I'm not in love with the way the brows turned out here, doesn't look quite smooth but then again my lack of brow hairs is probably the culprit or maybe it's the pencil I used. Retrospectively, I probably should have gone with a powder. You can also bring up the lid shade more towards the brow if you want more pow for a night time feel.)

    1. I'm hoping to make a comparison/review with the Revlon Colourstay liquid and the whipped.

  3. This smokey eye looks amazing on you, yay for tutorials! People tend to think that smokey means charcoal/brown, black or really dark colours and it can be about a medium tone shade as well. Two thumbs up from me! <3 xx

    1. You know, I used to think that way too and tried on various occasions to do a "proper" smokey eye with black/grey but just never found that it suited me well or at least with my skill level anyways. But I do love the "smokey" look so brown it is!
PS. One day though, I do hope to have a MUA try a really intense smokey look on me just to see how it's supposed to look.
